Gel vs Regular Nail Polish: What's the Difference and Which Should You Choose?

Gel and regular nail polish differ mainly in how they dry, how long they last and how they come off. If you want nails that stay glossy for 2–3 weeks without a touch-up, choose gel polish. If you like changing colours every week and removing polish at home, regular polish is more convenient. Below is a detailed comparison to help you pick the right one for your next manicure.

What is gel polish? What is regular polish?

Gel polish is a gel-based polish that only hardens (cures) under a UV or LED lamp. A gel manicure has several layers: a base coat, colour coats and a glossy top coat.

Regular polish (traditional nail lacquer) dries as its solvents evaporate in the air. You can apply it and wipe it off at home without any special tools.

1. Drying: does gel polish dry without UV light?

No. Gel polish only sets under a UV or LED lamp, so it is fully hard the moment your manicure is finished. You can pick up your phone or bag as soon as you leave the salon. Some products labelled "gel without a lamp" are actually regular polish with a thick top coat, so they don't last as long as real gel.

Regular polish, on the other hand, air-dries in about 15–20 minutes and smudges easily if you touch something too soon. Putting regular polish under a UV/LED lamp does not speed it up, because it dries by evaporation rather than curing like gel.

2. Durability: how long does gel polish last?

Gel polish keeps its shine and colour for about 2–3 weeks when applied properly. Regular polish usually starts chipping at the tips after a few days. That makes gel especially convenient for travelling, beach days in Da Nang, or busy weeks with no time for a touch-up.

3. Shine, colour and effects

Gel gives a higher shine and more even colour. It also allows effects that are hard to achieve with regular polish, such as cat eye gel with its moving streak of light, or metallic chrome gel.

4. Removal

Regular polish wipes off with nail polish remover. Gel needs to be soaked in a professional remover and gently pushed off. Peeling gel off at home often pulls away a layer of your natural nail, leaving it thin and weak. At 1996, gel removal takes only about 20 minutes and costs 20,000 – 30,000 VND.

5. Time and cost: how much is a gel manicure?

At 1996 Nail Studio, a single-colour gel manicure takes about 45 minutes and costs 130,000 VND. Multi-colour gel is 140,000 VND, cat eye gel 300,000 VND and chrome gel 400,000 VND. Counted by the number of days your nails look good, gel usually saves time compared with repainting regular polish several times. See the full price list.

Is gel polish bad for your nails?

Gel polish does not damage your nails when it is applied and removed correctly. Most problems come from habits rather than the gel itself:

  • Peeling gel off yourself: the most common reason nails become thin, weak and brittle.
  • Over-filing the nail surface before application or during removal.
  • Allergies: some people react to ingredients in gel. If the skin around your nails becomes red, itchy or swollen, have the gel removed and see a dermatologist.
  • UV from the lamp: exposure per session is small, but if you get gel manicures often, you can apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to the backs of your hands before curing.

If your nails feel weaker, give them a few days' break between gel manicures to recover.

Our gel manicure process at 1996 Nail Studio

  1. Shape the nails and clean up the cuticles.
  2. Apply a base coat for strong adhesion, then cure.
  3. Apply 2 colour coats, curing after each one for true colour.
  4. Finish with a glossy top coat and a final cure.
  5. Wipe off the sticky layer and moisturise your hands.

Gel manicure aftercare

  • Wear gloves when washing dishes or using cleaning products.
  • Don't use your nails as tools to open or scrape things.
  • Apply cuticle oil every night to keep the skin around your nails soft.
  • Get a new set after 2–3 weeks, when regrowth shows or the edges start to lift.

Gel or regular polish: which should you choose?

  • Choose gel if you are busy, about to travel, or want long-lasting shine.
  • Choose regular polish if you love switching colours or only need nails done for a day or two.
  • Weak or brittle nails? Consider a BIAB overlay to strengthen your natural nails.
