Either way, the technician first cleans, shapes and tidies the cuticles, then applies a base coat to protect your natural nail. The glitter itself is applied in one of two ways:
Glitter gel
Two coats of gel with glitter already mixed in, each cured under the lamp, then a top coat. The glitter spreads evenly over the whole nail. It's quick and works best for fine shimmer and simple designs.
Loose glitter
The technician paints the base colour, then sprinkles or dabs loose glitter onto the tacky gel, cures it and seals it with one or two top coats for a smooth finish. How Long Do Glitter Nails Last, and Are They Hard to Remove?
Because the glitter is sealed under a gel top coat, it usually stays looking good for about 2–3 weeks, just like regular gel polish, depending on how fast your nails grow and your daily habits. A glitter layer is thicker than a plain colour, so removal needs a little more soaking and filing. That's why:
- Don't pick or peel the glitter when the edges lift – it can take layers of your natural nail with it.
- Come in for gel removal so the technician can soak and file it off properly and protect your nails.
- Wear gloves when washing up or cleaning so the top coat doesn't turn dull.
- Apply cuticle oil every evening.
