How to Care for Your Nails at Home Between Salon Visits

Why does at-home nail care matter?

A beautiful manicure depends not only on your technician's skill but also on how you care for your nails between salon visits. The 2–4 week gap between appointments is exactly what determines whether your natural nails stay strong or weak, and whether your gel lasts or lifts quickly. Proper care saves you time and money and, most importantly, keeps your natural nails healthy.

At 1996 Nail Studio in Bac My An, Da Nang, we always encourage our guests to keep a simple home-care routine. Here is a complete, easy-to-follow guide.

1. Moisturize – the most important step

Nails and the skin around them (the cuticles) dry out easily, especially with frequent exposure to water and soap. Dry nails become brittle, break easily, and cause gel to lift sooner.

Cuticle oil

This is your number-one tool for healthy nails. Apply a drop of nourishing oil (jojoba, vitamin E, or coconut oil) to the nail edges every day, ideally before bed, then massage gently. This habit helps:

  • Keep the skin around nails soft and prevent hangnails.
  • Boost flexibility and reduce brittle breakage.
  • Help the gel adhere better at the base of the nail.

Hand cream

Do not forget to apply hand cream after every wash. Well-hydrated hands make your nails and skin look far healthier overall.

2. Protect nails from water and chemicals

Hot water and cleaning agents are the biggest enemies of both gel and natural nails. Too much exposure makes gel lift, dulls the color, and weakens the nails.

  • Always wear rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning, or doing laundry.
  • Avoid soaking hands in hot water for too long (long baths or extended dishwashing).
  • Dry your hands thoroughly after washing, since lingering moisture is not good for the gel base.

3. Stop using your nails as tools

This is the most common mistake that causes breaks and early lifting. Nails are not meant to pry open cans, peel stickers, remove staples, or force stuck zippers. Build the habit of reaching for a tool instead of using your nails. A nail that snaps mid-length is not just unsightly – it can damage the natural nail underneath.

4. Handle lifting gel the right way

After 2–3 weeks, the growing nail can cause the gel to lift slightly at the edges. Never peel, pull, or pick at the gel – this is the most serious mistake. When you peel gel off, the top layer of your natural nail comes with it, leaving the nail thin, weak, and sore.

Instead:

  • If only a small corner lifts, gently file the edge smooth so it does not catch on clothing.
  • Return to the salon to have the gel removed correctly (proper soaking or filing).
  • Do not cut deeply with clippers or pry the gel off with sharp tools at home.

5. Maintain shape and a sensible length

Between appointments you can still keep your nails tidy:

  • Use a soft file in one direction only (never back and forth) to avoid fraying.
  • Do not cut the cuticles too deeply at home – just gently push back dead skin with a soft tool.
  • If gel nails grow too long and get in the way, visit the salon to adjust rather than cutting them yourself, which can crack the gel.

6. Feed your nails from within

Strong nails start with a healthy body. A balanced diet helps natural nails grow firm and resist breaking:

  • Biotin (vitamin B7): Found in eggs and nuts, it helps nails grow thicker and stronger.
  • Protein: Nails are made of keratin, a protein, so be sure to get enough meat, fish, and beans.
  • Iron and zinc: A deficiency can leave nails weak, ridged, or prone to breaking.
  • Drink enough water: Keeps nails and skin from drying out from the inside.

7. Give your nails a rest when needed

If you have worn gel continuously for a long stretch and feel your nails weakening, consider giving them a short break or switching to gentler options. Remember that removing gel correctly at the salon is just as important as applying it – improper removal is a leading cause of nail damage.

8. A suggested care schedule

To make it easy to remember, follow this simple routine:

  • Daily: Apply cuticle oil and hand cream; wear gloves for housework.
  • Weekly: Check your nail shape, file gently if needed, and give hands extra moisture.
  • Every 2–4 weeks: Return to the salon for a fill or a fresh set.
